Treat your hair and the environment! The best organic hair products have natural ingredients for silky soft hair and use environmentally-friendly packaging. It’s the best of both worlds!

Hair is our crown, we wear our hairstyles like our personalities. As beautiful as we are, sometimes our hair needs the right kind of cleansing. Whether you want full body, bounce, or shine, we can make hair dreams come true while saving the environment. It’s a win-win!

Organic Vs. Eco-Friendly

Let’s talk definitions first. I mentioned organic hair products that are eco-friendly, which means those terms must be different. Organic means chemical-free, and when you see “USDA Approved” that means at least 70% of those ingredients are organic. The ones up to 30% leftover may be inorganic but they will be on the USDA’s national list where non-organic substances can be used with organic products.

Eco and environmentally-friendly symbolize no harm done to the environment. So in this case, how these organic hair products can be recycled and reused. If you aren’t sure how to properly recycle something like a shampoo bottle check this out: Recycling: Everything to Know.

All of these brands use organic ingredients AND eco-friendly packaging.

Shampoo and Conditioner Bars

If you haven’t heard about bars yet, you’re in for a treat! They’re eco-friendly hair products that act like soaps. Here’s how to use shampoo and conditioner bars:

  1. Wet your hair.
  2. Get the bar slightly wet.
  3. Gently rub the bar onto your hair and scalp.
  4. The bar will lather your hair, so work through it with your fingers.
  5. Rinse.

You’ll only need one shampoo bar to get silky hair but if you want extra nourishment then repeat with the conditioner bar. Because the concentration is higher in bars, you’ll get more out of it – they last up to six times longer!

Organic Hair Products

Here we go! As a woman with long hair (almost at my hips now!) I was excited to research this topic and share with you the best way to treat any hair and do it with environmental class. This list has organic shampoos, conditioners, hair oils, masks, and more!

Prose

Lucky you, here lie the secrets of my hair! And Prose knows no hair is the same. They’re all about customized hair care with shampoos, conditioners, pre-shower masks, and hair oil. So I took their hair quiz (very detailed) and it told me how my scalp and hair are doing. As shown above, my hair is naturally oily (I’m Italian) but their formula regulates this for me.

They also ask where you are going to be in the next few months so they can accommodate the harshness of the weather on your hair. How neat is that!

Plaine

You’re welcome 😉 But actually, these eco-friendly products are for all genders!

The two sisters and founders of Plaine Products had the vision to produce less waste in the world, and they are succeeding. One was living in the Bahamas and saw plastic on the sidewalks, in the ocean, and on the beach. Together, they researched and created organic hair products that can be reused and recycled (they can be sent back to Plaine). They also test and approve all products.

Etsy

etsy shampoo bars

The reason I included Etsy in this list is that there are a ton of companies that encompass or roundup all-natural and eco-friendly products. These websites, such as Naturisimo and Credo Beauty, showcase organic hair products such as the ones in the picture (which I’m excited to try, thanks to my wonderful aunt – it smells amazing). So search around on these fun sites to see what you find!

Some cool ingredients in this bar include quinoa protein, organic coconut oil, avocado oil, and nettle extract.

SheaMoisture

sheamoisture shampoo and conditioner

Perhaps you’ve seen SheaMoisture in the hair aisle at the store or heard about it from a friend, but I’ve been using their organic hair products for years. From ginseng root to baobab oils, the ingredients are incredibly natural and healthy for your hair.

Sofi Tucker, the founder, started selling Shea nuts in 1912 at the local market in Sierra Leone (West Africa). Let’s just say her legacy continues in this family-owned company, creating a brighter future for all-natural ingredients and sustainability. Make sure to clean out and recycle the bottles!

Eco Girl

hair product

I happened upon this site recently and was amazed at her organic hair products! Eco Girl has shampoo bars with scents like coconut + lavender, apple cider vinegar + citrus, and aloe + tea tree that ease the mind and body. Using these products brings me into a mindful meditative state because self-care is powerful and I feel SO good knowing I’m helping my earth, too.

Alaffia

alaffia products

Made across Western Africa and similar to SheaMoisture, Alaffia uses safe and organic ingredients. Their sustainability mission is through empowerment projects that provide jobs and education in African communities.

I was using professional salon hair oils for the longest time. A few years ago while getting a haircut in San Diego (you know something’s about to happen..) the wonderful spunky hairdresser chatted my ear about how unhealthy my hair was because of the unnatural ingredients in those mainstream hair products. I thanked her for chopping my damaged hair off, walked straight to the nearest co-op, and bought this Alaffia oil mist. It was love at first sight and I use it to this day.

10 incredible and inspirational companies creating organic hair products that are healthy and eco-friendly too. I highly recommend you try one (the shampoo bars are so fun) and see where it takes you and your gorgeous hair! These brands show going plastic-free doesn’t have to be tough. Like I said, best of both worlds 🙂
